Background

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists was celebrating its 90th anniversary when it held its 2024 National Scientific Congress in Darwin. The annual Congress brings together anaesthetists from across Australia and internationally to share the latest research findings from world-renowned industry thought-leaders, discuss topical ideas and promote the wellbeing of the community of medical professionals.

challenge

Social impact was high on the priority list, with organisers wanting to truly integrate the local Aboriginal culture and involve Darwin/ Garramilla suppliers with ASA NSC 24, while leaving as little environmental footprint as possible.

solutions

  • Name badges: Recycled bamboo lanyards and badges made from recyclable paper were used, while delegates were encouraged to return their name badges post-congress so that they could be recycled
  • Suppliers: A preference for local suppliers with sustainable social and environmental practices
  • No single-use items: A ban on single-use items including, but not limited to, coffee cups, exhibition material and delegate collateral
  • More digital, less paper: Printed materials swapped with digital versions, including onsite signage and a mobile app for all program and sponsorship information.
  • Embracing Aboriginal culture: Logo designed by Anangu artist Elizabeth Close
  • Encouraging families: A parents’ room for delegates with children with online viewing of the presentations, plus ‘Kids save lives’ hands-on workshop for children to learn basic first aid
  • Market-style networking: A private space was reserved at the popular beach-front Mindil Beach Markets on Sunday, allowing delegates to continue networking while supporting local artisans
