What Are Carbon Credits?
Carbon credits are a form of tradeable certificates that represent the removal or reduction of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. By purchasing these credits, businesses compensate for their own carbon emissions, funding projects that work to mitigate climate change through conservation efforts. In FY 2024 Arinex’ emissions reduced by -11% from FY23, thanks mostly to a –47% reduction in air travel.
Mapoon Carbon Project
Location: Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia – approximately 840km from Cairns.
The Mapoon Carbon Project is a Savanna Fire Management initiative that spans a huge 175,400 hectares in the remote region of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland. This project uses traditional Aboriginal fire management practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, by strategically managing the land through controlled burning to prevent larger, more dangerous wildfires.
While the environmental benefits are clear, the Mapoon Carbon Project goes far beyond its ecological impacts, providing significant community co-benefits that extend into the local Mapoon community. Key components of these co-benefits include:
- Revitalisation of Cultural Practices: The project helps to preserve and revitalise traditional cultural practices, with an emphasis on reconnecting the Mapoon community to their ancestral land of the Tjungundji people.
- Local Employment Opportunities: By supporting the project, we are helping to create meaningful employment for the Mapoon residents, particularly through roles such as Aboriginal rangers. These roles not only provide job opportunities but also build local expertise in land stewardship, environmental management, and the preservation of the area’s unique biodiversity.
- Strengthening Land Stewardship: Through the project, the Mapoon community is empowered to take an active role in managing their land, ensuring the protection of sacred sites, and engaging in sustainable practices that protect the land for future generations.
The Mapoon Carbon Project allows us at Arinex to integrate our commitment to sustainability with the goals of our Reconciliation Action Plan, including actively supporting initiatives that create economic and social opportunities for these communities.
Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project
Location: Democratic Republic of Congo
The Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project is a pioneering initiative aimed at protecting one of the world’s most vital carbon sinks – the Congo Basin. This project works to reduce deforestation and degradation by incentivising sustainable land management practices, ultimately protecting the region’s biodiversity while contributing to the global fight against climate change. The Mai Ndombe REDD+ Project offers a win-win solution for both local communities and the environment. By preserving the region’s forests, the project prevents the release of millions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. The revenue generated from carbon credit purchases also supports local communities, providing sustainable livelihoods, creating jobs, and improving the socio-economic conditions of those living near the project area.
