Challenge:
When a group of employees from a US-based financial software company eagerly undertook an incentive trip to Fiji, the challenge was to create a memorable welcome experience while also ensuring benefits for the local Fijian community.
Solution:
As the designated destination management company (DMC), Arinex designed an authentic welcome experience that involved creating an exclusive outdoor market featuring local vendors.
The marketplace showcased unique products that reflected the rich Fijian culture. These included Essence of Fiji with therapeutic spa products, Paw Paw Patch offering handmade floral products, Pottery Village showcasing handmade pottery and jewellery from a remote village, Hot Glass with exquisite hand-blown glassware, and Rise Beyond the Reef supporting Fijian women artisans and their communities through homemade crafts.
To create a fun and engaging shopping experience, guests were provided with company-branded ‘funny money’, a form of currency exclusive to the event. Each guest received the equivalent of 240 Fijian dollars (approx. USD 110) and were encouraged to embrace the experience and spend their allocated money.
To enhance the cultural experience, the event was held on the beachfront at the Intercontinental Hotel, providing a picturesque backdrop. The market also featured local dancers and activities such as palm weaving and kava tasting, further immersing the guests in the Fijian culture.
Outcome:
The new approach of an exclusive outdoor market proved a success, both in terms of supporting local businesses and communities, and providing an unforgettable experience for the incentive trip guests.
The participating vendors received over USD 20,000 in sales combined, which was paid in full by the guests’ employer. Much of this profit was allocated to the smaller, remote businesses which greatly impacted their livelihoods. They had never experienced such high sales within a two-hour period.
The event proved to be a highlight for Arinex as the team ventured into this new and impactful incentive experience. Moreover, the guests’ strong support for the smaller vendors highlighted their appreciation for the local culture and a genuine desire to contribute to the community.
